Mold, as it is referred to, are destructive microorganisms that cause damage to building materials and poses health risks to humans and pets ranging from allergic reactions to more serious health problems.

Mold is a normal part of nature and is found throughout the world. Mold grows through its tiny seeds called spores. These spores float through our homes in small quantities during the course of a typical day causing no problems – unless the spores find a place to grow. Mold needs water and a food source to grow and, given the right conditions, can become a problem in as little as 24-36 hours. One mold can have up to 10,000 spores and when you can see mold it has colonized with thousands of individual molds.

Microorganisms fall into three general groups: beneficial, destructive and neutral. The neutral microbes comprise about 90% of the total while the beneficial comprise around 5% and the destructive microbes comprise about 5%. How To Keep Mold Away From Your Home

Interior

• Monitor humidity levels, keeping the relative humidity below 50%, running a dehumidifier if necessary.  Hygrometers can be purchased at a local hardware store.
• Encourage active airflow throughout the building.  Open windows, clean and or add roof top ventilation. 
• Utilize bathroom and kitchen fans. Make sure they vent to the outside, not simply the attic.
• Ventilate dryer exhaust outside.
• Maintain air gap between furniture and exterior walls.
• Clean and dry windows often, especially single pane, aluminum frame style.
• Periodically check plumbing fixtures for signs of water leaks.
• Maintain comfortable temperatures in all living quarters, including basement.  As temperatures drop the potential for localized condensation increases.
• Insulate basement walls, piping and in older homes, the exterior walls.

Exterior

• Prevent sprinklers from hitting your home.
• Clean gutters regularly and check downspouts from proper drainage.
• Check roof for missing / damaged shingles.
